About this Movement

Short, free verse poems shared digitally and often accompanied by simple illustrations or images began to flourish in social media, especially Instagram, in the early 2010s. Gradually the term "instapoetry" combined "Instagram" and "poetry" to reflect the temporal and intimate works on love, healing, and identity, often through a feminist lens. Cambodian-Australian poet Lang Leav is widely regarded as an early pioneer, with her collection Love and Misadventure (Andrews McMeel Publishing, 2013). Indian-Canadian poet Rupi Kaur expanded the movement significantly with milk and honey, self-published in 2014 and later picked up by Andrews McMeel, where it spent over 100 consecutive weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Other prominent practitioners include Nikita Gill, Atticus, and r.h. sin. The movement has generated critical debate however remaining widely accessible.
