Born in Vallejo, California, Rae Armantrout is a founding figure of the Language poetry movement. She studied at the University of California, San Diego, where she later taught for many years. Her collection Versed (Wesleyan University Press, 2009) won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the 2009 National Book Critics Circle Award, and was a finalist for the National Book Award. She has also received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
