William Carlos Williams (1883–1963) was an American modernist poet born in Rutherford, New Jersey, where he practiced medicine throughout his life. Educated at the University of Pennsylvania medical school, where he knew Ezra Pound and H.D., he summarized his approach in the dictum "no ideas but in things." His collections include Spring and All (1923), the book-length Paterson (New Directions, 1946–1958), and Pictures from Brueghel and Other Poems (New Directions, 1962), which received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry posthumously in 1963. He won the first National Book Award for Poetry in 1950 and the Bollingen Prize in 1953.
