↑Black Arts Movement Poetry
The Black Arts Movement was an artistic movement that reached its heights between 1965 - 1975 and has been described by many as the cultural equivalent or extension of the Black Power Movement. Amiri Baraka is credited with catalyzing the movement which gave rise to incomparable luminaries like Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, Ishmael Reed, Audre Lorde, and Gwendolyn Brooks, just to name a few. The poetry is characterized by scintillating verse on Black self-determination, politics, and culture.

↑Celebrities
Some surprising poetry collections of recent years have come from familiar faces. Actors, musicians, and public figures have long turned to verse to say what other forms cannot — to process grief, heartbreak, abuse, faith, and the particular pressures of life lived in public. This collection brings together poetry books by well-known names whose work deserves to be read on its own terms: confessional, funny, raw, and often more accomplished than you might expect. Whether you're a fan of the author or simply curious what happens when a celebrity picks up a pen with serious intent, there's something here worth reading.
Contemporary Black Poetry
This collection is comprised of 32 remarkable poets, pulled from groups like Cave Canum, Furious Flower, and selected from bestselling poetry lists. This barely scratches the surface of the poets publishing today and the range of genres, forms, and themes through their work. If there is a poet whose work you would like to see here, please help us out and let us know: info@thepoetryshop.com

Poetic Commons Book Club 2026
This collection includes all the books in Maya C. Popa's Poetic Commons Book Club. "Once a month, we’ll gather to discuss a single poetry collection. Rather than evaluating a book’s success, I’m interested in what attentive reading offers us, and in what we gain by making room for different interpretations and points of view." You can sign up for online events at mayacpopa.com/book-club.

↑Recommendations from Poets: The Poetry Shop 5
The Poetry Shop 5 is our ongoing conversation with the poetry community. In each interview, a poet recommends a book or two or three: Who was your "gateway poet"—the writer who first drew you to poetry? Which poetry book are you currently reading? Is there a book on the craft of writing that you recommend to poets? Who is a new voice in poetry that we need to check out–someone with a debut book or recent release? Finally, what’s a poetry book that others may not know about but deserves a shout out? Visit our blog for the full series.
