About Allen Ginsberg

A leading figure of the Beat Generation, Allen Ginsberg (1926–1997) was born in Newark, New Jersey. His poem Howl, first read in San Francisco in 1955 and published by City Lights Books in 1956, became the subject of a landmark obscenity trial. Kaddish and Other Poems (City Lights, 1961) followed the death of his mother. He shared the 1974 National Book Award for Poetry for The Fall of America: Poems of These States, 1965–1971 (City Lights, 1973). Ginsberg opposed the Vietnam War and campaigned for civil liberties across his career.
