About Gbenga Adesina

A Nigerian poet and essayist, Gbenga Adesina earned his MFA at New York University, where he was mentored by Yusef Komunyakaa. His debut collection, Death Does Not End at the Sea (University of Nebraska Press), won the 2024 Raz/Shumaker Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry and was longlisted for the 2025 National Book Award in Poetry. The book went on to receive the 2026 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Poetry, from a jury chaired by Natasha Trethewey. Adesina serves as the inaugural Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Black Global and Diasporic Poetry at the Furious Flower Poetry Center at James Madison University, and he cofounded and edits A Long House. His poems have appeared in the Paris Review, Harvard Review, and the New York Times Magazine.
