Poetry collections from BOA Editions, CavanKerry Press, Nightboat Books, Persea, Tupelo and Write Bloody Publishing top the list of new poetry books added to the shop this week.
This week at The Poetry Shop, we feature a new release from Maria Giesbrecht (@theguelphpoet). Her much-anticipated debut poetry collection, A Little Feral, charts a journey away from religion, her father, and the confines of obedience. Orange by Noel Quiñones paints a vivid and fraught portrait of the North Bronx through narrative poems and innovative forms. Raw & Zero, the second collection from Imogen Smith, explores trans spirituality and the genocide in Palestine with musical incitement. Derrick Austin weaves the sacred and the erotic in This Elegance. Late life God-hunger, soul-making language, and beauty fill Soul Cake: Poems by Lisa Russ Spaar. And John James Extinction Song uses long-form meditative lyrics to explore questions of agency in the Anthropocene.
Orange (CavanKerry Press) by Noel Quiñones
https://thepoetryshop.com/products/orange
A bold and tender portrait of family, identity, and truth in the North Bronx. Through narrative poems and innovative forms inspired by color theory and elementary school, Orange explores the ripple effects of queerness, lies, and finding yourself in a family.
A Little Feral (Write Bloody Publishing) by Maria Giesbrecht
In A Little Feral, Maria Giesbrecht (@theguelphpoet) delivers a debut collection that navigates faith, family, and personal resurrection through a voice at once wild, intimate, and quietly rebellious. Written in the aftermath of leaving a conservative Mennonite upbringing, these poems chart a parallel journey of breaking away-- from father, from God, from the confines of obedience.
Raw & Zero (Nightboat Books) by Imogen Smith
Occupied with trans spirituality, the genocide in Palestine, and the manifold intricacies of queer love and struggle, the poems in Imogen Smith's second collection, Raw & Zero, open up an unabashedly musical incitement to take a stand on honest ground.
This Elegance (BOA Editions) by Derrick Austin
Interweaving the sacred and the erotic, This Elegance engages with visual arts through the concept of sacra conversazione ("sacred conversation"), a style of Renaissance painting that imagines divine communion across time and space.
Soul Cake: Poems (Persea Books) by Lisa Russ Spaar
Lisa Russ Spaar's seventh full-length collection of poems, Soul Cake, which takes its title from an ancient mummer/wassailer's carol, leans with late-life, hibernal ecstasy into Spaar's flood subjects: God hunger, soul-making, language, beauty, and an unquenched desire for the b/Beloved.
Extinction Song (Tupelo Press) by John James
A collection that combines fixed poetic forms with long-form meditative lyrics to explore questions of agency in the Anthropocene.
