The Poetry Shop is tiptoeing online this week. Why a whisper not a shout? We want to share the news with you first. We want to hear your gut reactions, delight, surprise... and yes, we want to hear about the errors, too. We're only two people: we value feedback.
The origin of this store is simple: we noticed that most brick-and-mortar bookstores, online retailers, and even libraries, don't center poetry. They either don't have compelling inventory, or they have all the inventory but little love for the community. What if... we wondered, there could be an online store devoted to poetry?
For the past few months, we worked to make our hypothesis a reality. David built the site, formed our vendor partnerships, and mapped out the business (...he's a designer with an MBA from BU - go, Terriers!)
Katie took the lead on building inventory, starting with her personal library of poetry books--from Maurice Sendak's Chicken Soup with Rice through to her time at Emerson College as a BFA (she's a big Bill Knott fan) to her latest poetry obsessions. She's constantly on the lookout for new books from podcasts to literary journals to online-first poets to award-winners to new releases from independent and mainstream publishers.
We don't have all poets online (yet)! Some of this is due to books being out of print. Some of it is due to distribution channels. If we missed a poet you love (or if you're a poet and we missed you!) please reach out. We want you here.
