Jane Hirshfield received her BA from Princeton University in its first graduating class to include women, and her first poem appeared in The Nation in 1973. Given Sugar, Given Salt (HarperCollins, 2001) was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and The Beauty (Alfred A. Knopf, 2015) was longlisted for the National Book Award. Later volumes include Ledger (Knopf, 2020) and The Asking: New & Selected Poems (Knopf, 2023). She has written two essay collections and co-translated four books gathering the work of poets from the distant past. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019.
