A Ukrainian poet, novelist, and translator born in Starobilsk, Serhiy Zhadan holds a doctorate in philology from Kharkiv Pedagogical University and is based in Kharkiv. His poetry collections include Antenna (2018) and How Fire Descends: New and Selected Poetry (Yale University Press, 2023). His novels include Mesopotamia (2015) and The Orphanage (2019). In 2022 he received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade and the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought. He has also received the Carl Zuckmayer Medal and the Petrarch Prize.
