About Czeslaw Milosz

Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1980, Czeslaw Milosz (1911-2004) was a Polish poet, essayist, and translator born in Szetejnie, then within the Russian-controlled territory of present-day Lithuania. Raised in a Polish-speaking family, he studied law in Vilnius and published his first poems as a teenager. Having survived the German occupation of Warsaw, he later served as a cultural attache for postwar Poland before defecting and settling in the United States, where he taught at the University of California, Berkeley. His prose study The Captive Mind (1953) examined intellectuals' accommodation to communism. The Swedish Academy cited his work for voicing, with uncompromising clear-sightedness, humanity's exposed condition in a world of severe conflict.
