About Georgia Douglas Johnson

Georgia Douglas Johnson (1880–1966) graduated from Atlanta University's normal school and studied music at Oberlin Conservatory. Her work first appeared in Crisis in 1916. She moved to Washington in 1910, and after her husband's death in 1925 supported two sons on temporary work until the Department of Labor hired her, a post she lost in 1934. Her house on S Street, which she called the Half-Way House, held the gatherings known as the S Street Salon or the Saturday Nighters, where Langston Hughes and Jean Toomer came. The Heart of a Woman and Other Poems appeared in 1918, Bronze in 1922, An Autumn Love Cycle in 1928 and Share My World in 1962. She also wrote plays.
