About Maurice Sendak

Maurice Sendak (1928–2012) was an illustrator, author and stage designer. Born in Brooklyn to immigrants from Poland, he was largely self-taught as an artist. He illustrated more than 150 books beyond his own. Where the Wild Things Are won the Caldecott Medal in 1964, and In the Night Kitchen was named a Caldecott Honor Book in 1971. The Nutshell Library gathers four miniature books, among them Chicken Soup with Rice and Pierre. He received the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the National Medal of Arts and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, and designed for opera and the stage. He made picture books, not poetry.
