He attended Dartmouth College, where he edited the humor magazine Jack-O-Lantern, and later studied at Oxford. His first children's book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street (1937), launched a career that produced classics including The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, Horton Hears a Who!, The Lorax, and Green Eggs and Ham.
