About Margarita Engle

Margarita Engle writes for children and young adults, largely in verse. She trained first as a scientist, studying agronomy and botany and earning degrees from California State Polytechnic University and Iowa State University, before turning to writing about Cuba, the country her mother came from. The Surrender Tree received a Newbery Honor in 2009, and she has won three Pura Belpré Author Awards. She served as the Poetry Foundation's Young People's Poet Laureate from 2017 to 2019, and won the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children's Literature in 2019.
