About Matthew Burgess

Matthew Burgess writes for adults and for children. His poetry collection Slippers for Elsewhere came from UpSet Press in 2014; since then the picture books have accumulated, among them Enormous Smallness, a nonfiction portrait of E. E. Cummings illustrated by Kris Di Giacomo, and Words With Wings and Magic Things, illustrated by Doug Salati. He has edited two anthologies, Dream Closet: Meditations on Childhood Space and Spellbound: The Art of Teaching Poetry. Burgess holds a PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center and has taught in the English department at Brooklyn College since 1999. He has also served as a poet-in-residence in New York City elementary schools through Teachers & Writers Collaborative.
