About James Weldon Johnson

James Weldon Johnson (1871–1938) wrote the words of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” in 1900. He wrote them for a Lincoln's birthday celebration at the segregated Jacksonville school where he was principal; his brother J. Rosamond Johnson composed the music. He received a BA and an MA from Atlanta University, was admitted to the Florida Bar, and served as United States consul in Venezuela and then Nicaragua before joining the NAACP, whose executive secretary he was from 1920 to 1930. His poetry collections are Fifty Years and Other Poems (1917) and God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse (1927); he also wrote the novel The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man and edited The Book of American Negro Poetry. The NAACP gave him its Spingarn Medal in 1925.
