About Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, and statesman whose work spanned virtually every literary genre. His novel The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) is associated with the Sturm und Drang movement. He served the court at Weimar and became a central exponent of Weimar Classicism, a phase reflected in Roman Elegies (1795). His verse drama Faust appeared in two parts (1808 and 1832), the second published the year of his death. He remains widely regarded as the foremost writer in the German language.
