No work from classical antiquity has exerted such a continuing influence on world literature as Ovid's Metamorphoses. Drawing on the Greek and Roman mythology, Ovid's masterpiece comprises 11,995 lines, 15 books and over 250 myths from the creation of the world to the apotheosis of Julius Caesar. Ovid directs his dramas one after another, relentlessly bombarding his readers with beautiful metrics and awe-inspiring imagery as that of Io and Jupiter, Narcissus and Echo, Daphne and Apollo, Minos and the Minotaur. These 250 stories are linked only by their common theme of metamorphosis. Don't hesitate to take the time to read this full text translated into English by Brookes More. These fabulous stories still provide answers to the riddles of life.

About Ovid

The Roman poet Ovid (43 BCE–17/18 CE) was born Publius Ovidius Naso in Sulmo, in central Italy, and trained in rhetoric at Rome before turning to poetry. In 8 CE the emperor Augustus banished him to Tomis, on the Black Sea, where he remained until his death. His Metamorphoses, a mythological epic in fifteen books, runs from the creation of the world to the deification of Julius Caesar. His other major works include the Ars Amatoria, a guide to love, and the Tristia, written during his exile. The Metamorphoses became a central source for later European writers, among them Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Ted Hughes.
