About Stephen Dobyns

Stephen Dobyns (1941–2026) reported for the Detroit News before earning an MFA at the University of Iowa. He taught at Sarah Lawrence, Warren Wilson's MFA Program for Writers, Syracuse and Boston University. He wrote novels alongside the poems. Concurring Beasts (Atheneum, 1972) won an Academy of American Poets award judged by Michael Benedikt, Richard Howard and James Merrill; Black Dog, Red Dog was a National Poetry Series selection, chosen by Robert Hass; Cemetery Nights won a Melville Cane Award. Velocities gathered his first quarter-century, The Day's Last Light Reddens the Leaves of the Copper Beech came from BOA Editions in 2016, and Next Word, Better Word is his book on craft. He died on 14 June 2026.
