At his death, Theodore Roethke left behind 277 spiral notebooks full of poetry fragments, aphorisms, jokes, memos, journal entries, random phrases, bits of dialogue, commentary, and fugitive miscellany. Within these notebooks, Roethke allowed his mind to rove freely, moment by moment, moving from the practical to the transcendental, from the halting to the sublime.


Fellow poet and colleague David Wagoner distilled these notebooks--twelve linear feet of bookshelf--into an energetic, wise, and rollicking collection that shows Roethke to be one of the truly phenomenal creative sources in American poetry.

About Theodore Roethke

Theodore Roethke (1908–1963) won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1954 for The Waking. He won the National Book Award for Poetry twice, in 1959 for Words for the Wind and in 1965 for The Far Field. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, he was educated at the University of Michigan and taught at Lafayette College, Pennsylvania State and Bennington before settling at the University of Washington, where Richard Hugo was among his students. He died on Bainbridge Island, Washington. The two books stocked here are prose: On Poetry and Craft: Selected Prose and Straw for the Fire, drawn from his notebooks, both from Copper Canyon Press.
