About Richard Hugo

Richard Hugo (1923–1982) flew thirty-five missions as a bombardier over the Mediterranean during the Second World War. Born in White Center, Washington, he afterwards earned a BA in creative writing in 1948 and an MA in 1952 at the University of Washington, where he studied under Theodore Roethke. He worked as a technical writer at Boeing before teaching English and creative writing for some two decades at the University of Montana in Missoula, and from 1977 he edited the Yale Series of Younger Poets. He was twice a National Book Award finalist in poetry, for The Lady in Kicking Horse Reservoir and What Thou Lovest Well, Remains American. He died in Seattle. The Triggering Town collects lectures and essays rather than poems.
