About Sonia Sanchez

Born Wilsonia Benita Driver in Birmingham, Alabama, Sonia Sanchez became a leading figure of the Black Arts Movement and earned a BA in political science from Hunter College in 1955. She has written more than twenty volumes of poetry, among them Homecoming (Broadside Press, 1969), Homegirls & Handgrenades (White Pine Press, 1984), winner of an American Book Award, Does your house have lions? (Beacon Press, 1995), Morning Haiku (Beacon Press, 2010), and Collected Poems (Beacon Press, 2021). Her honors include the Frost Medal, the 2018 Wallace Stevens Award, and the 2022 Jackson Poetry Prize. She held the Laura Carnell Chair in English at Temple University until 1999 and lives in Philadelphia.
