About Claude McKay

Claude McKay (1889–1948) came to the United States from Jamaica in 1912. He worked menial jobs in New York while writing the sonnets that made him a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Born Festus Claudius McKay at Sunny Ville, he published “The Harlem Dancer” in 1917 and “If We Must Die” in 1919, and Harlem Shadows followed from Harcourt, Brace in 1922. He befriended Max Eastman, editor of The Liberator, travelled to the Soviet Union, and spent eleven years in Europe and northern Africa. His novel Home to Harlem came from Harper in 1928. Jamaica named him its national poet in 1977.
