About Arthur Rimbaud

Arthur Rimbaud (1854–1891) wrote all of his poetry before he was twenty-one and then stopped. In roughly five years he produced Une saison en enfer and the prose poems of Illuminations. He was born at Charleville in north-eastern France. Having abandoned literature entirely, he spent his last years trading in Aden and Abyssinia; Illuminations was published in 1886 by Paul Verlaine while Rimbaud was in Africa, and he had no hand in it. He returned to France in 1891 with a tumour in his knee, had the leg amputated, and died in a Marseille hospital at thirty-seven. He is buried at Charleville.
