About Lyn Hejinian

A founding figure of the Language poetry movement, Lyn Hejinian (1941-2024) was a poet, essayist, translator, and publisher who taught in the English department at the University of California, Berkeley. Her prose-poem My Life first appeared from Burning Deck in 1980 and was twice expanded and reprinted. Among her many collections are Writing Is an Aid to Memory (The Figures, 1978), The Fatalist (Omnidawn Publishing, 2003), Saga/Circus (Omnidawn Publishing, 2008), and Tribunal (Omnidawn Publishing, 2019). Her essays were gathered in The Language of Inquiry (University of California Press, 2000). A native Californian, Hejinian edited Tuumba Press and coedited Poetics Journal. She was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 2006 and held a Guggenheim Fellowship.
