About Darrel Alejandro Holnes

An Afro-Panamanian American poet, playwright, and performer raised in Panama City and the former Panama Canal Zone, Darrel Alejandro Holnes earned an MFA from the University of Michigan's Helen Zell Writing Program. His chapbook Migrant Psalms (Northwestern University Press, 2021) won the Drinking Gourd Poetry Prize, and his first full-length collection, Stepmotherland (University of Notre Dame Press, 2022), won the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize from Letras Latinas and an International Latino Book Award. He received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in poetry and has held residencies at MacDowell and Ucross.
