About Edna St. Vincent Millay

Poet and playwright Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892–1950) was born in Rockland, Maine. Her poem "Renascence," entered in The Lyric Year's 1912 contest, brought acclaim and a scholarship to Vassar College, where she also turned to theater. The year of her graduation she published her first book, Renascence and Other Poems (Harper, 1917). After Vassar she settled in Greenwich Village and released A Few Figs from Thistles (Harper & Brothers, 1920). In 1923 she won the Pulitzer Prize for The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver (Flying Cloud Press, 1922). She also wrote verse plays and the libretto for the American grand opera The King's Henchman (Harper & Brothers, 1927). Millay died in Austerlitz, New York.
