About Bob Kaufman

Bob Kaufman (1925–1986) co-founded the magazine Beatitude in San Francisco in 1959 with Allen Ginsberg and others. He published three broadsides with City Lights: Abomunist Manifesto and Second April that year, then Does the Secret Mind Whisper? in 1960. After Kennedy's assassination in 1963 he took a vow of silence and kept it for years. New Directions published Solitudes Crowded with Loneliness in 1965 and The Ancient Rain: Poems 1956–1978 in 1981; Golden Sardine came from City Lights. City Lights' Collected Poems, edited by Neeli Cherkovski, Raymond Foye and Tate Swindell, won a 2020 American Book Award.
