In Mary Biddinger's The Girl with the Black Lipstick, creative writing grad student Mary Van Pelt and her eccentric roommate navigate the collision between party life, domestic harmony, and academic ambition. Set against the backdrop of Chicago's vibrant cultural scene, these linked flash stories conjure outrageous fashion, odd jobs, and the search for belonging.
Before smartphones filled every pocket, there was performance and spectacle. Biddinger offers vivid, surreal vignettes as Van Pelt journeys from graduate school to tenured professor, deepening her bond with her roommate while facing an uncertain future. The Girl with the Black Lipstick is a tribute to found family and the unexpected ways they shape our lives. Perfect for readers who enjoy coming-of-age stories, literary humor, and 90s nostalgia.
