About Ja A. Jahannes

Ja A. Jahannes (1942–2015) was an American poet, playwright, librettist, composer, and educator born in Baltimore, Maryland. He earned a BA from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, two master's degrees from Hampton University, and a PhD from the University of Delaware. He published poetry and essay collections and the novel Big Man, and wrote and produced twelve plays along with oratorios and opera librettos. He joined Savannah State University in 1981 as Dean of the School of Humanities. He received the Langston Hughes Cultural Arts Award in 1981 and an Atlantic Center for the Arts fellowship in 1982.
