About Richard Aldington

An English poet, novelist, critic, and translator, Richard Aldington (1892-1962) ranked among the founding poets of the Imagist movement promoted by Ezra Pound. Born Edward Godfree Aldington in Hampshire, he married the poet H.D. (Hilda Doolittle) in 1913 and served as literary editor of the Egoist. His early Imagist verse appeared in Images, Old and New (Four Seas, 1916), followed by the war collections Images of War (Allen & Unwin, 1919) and Images of Desire (Elkin Mathews, 1919). Service in World War I shaped his semi-autobiographical novel Death of a Hero (Friede, 1929). He later wrote biographies of D.H. Lawrence and T.E. Lawrence, living for years as an expatriate in France.
