
About the poet: Andrea Gibson
Andrea Gibson (1974–2024) was one of America's most celebrated spoken word poets and performance artists, and served as Colorado's ninth Poet Laureate. Beginning their career at an open mic in Boulder, Colorado in 1999, Gibson won the first Women of the World Poetry Slam in 2008 and went on to release seven spoken word albums alongside multiple acclaimed poetry collections. Their work addresses queer identity, gender, illness, love, and social justice with remarkable vulnerability and warmth. Their collection You Better Be Lightning (Button Poetry, 2021) won the gold medal for poetry at the 2022 Independent Publisher Book Awards.
